Animal School has over 20 years of experience in assisting persons with disabilities to train their own service dogs to assist them with daily tasks.
Specialty training for people with challenges or disabilities and their animal partners.
- Individualized Basic Training
- Public Access Training
- Assistance Task Training based on the individual needs of person
with a disability
The process of owner-training a service dog includes individually customized training for the needs of the client. This may be for such tasks as mobility assistance, guide work, sound alert assistance, psychiatric assistance as well as other disabilities that a person may be living with.
When considering owner-training, the person must have the resources to provide humane care for the service dog as well as be willing to train the tasks required by their needs, under our coaching, guidance and instruction.
Above all, safety for the client, dog and public must take place. When considering a service dog candidate, the following is important:
- Stable temperament of the dog to function as a service dog
- Dog capable of being trained to perform needed service tasks.
The end result is that a team show demonstrated capability of being safe and effective in public social habitats, e.g. with other animals, on public transportation, in shops, on public streets.
For those who are considering taking on training their own service dog with our assistance, we offer consultations in assessing the person's needs as well as temperament testing the service dog candidate. If a dog is not currently with a person, assistance may be obtained from Animal School to temperament test dogs which may be considered.
